Quick Learner's Guide

A sneak peek at the basics.

Before you hit the road, get familiar with the essentials every driver needs to know.

Road Signs

Kenya uses four main classes of traffic signs to keep roads safe.

  • A Regulatory — Rules you must obey (Stop, No Entry, Speed Limit).
  • B Warning — Alerts for hazards ahead (Bends, Animals, School Zone).
  • C Information — Guidance and directions (Parking, Hospital, Route).
  • D Road Markings — Lines and kerb markings on the carriageway.

Classification per the Kenya Traffic Signs Rules (Legal Notice 310 of 1974).

Manual Car Controls

Master these three pedals and the gear lever before your first lesson.

C
Clutch (Left)

Engages and disengages the engine from the wheels.

B
Brake (Centre)

Slows or stops the vehicle.

A
Accelerator (Right)

Increases engine speed and vehicle speed.

Gear Lever

A 5-speed manual typically uses a 1-3-5 / 2-4-R layout. Always start in 1st.

Driving Basics

Every learner driver in Kenya must grasp these core rules.

  • Keep Left — Kenya drives on the left side of the road.
  • Seatbelt — Mandatory for driver and all passengers.
  • Indicate Early — Signal before every turn or lane change.
  • Mirror & Blind Spot — Check before moving off or overtaking.
  • Speed Limits — Obey posted limits; reduce in rain or at night.
NTSA Tip

The Kenya Learner Drivers' Handbook is your best study companion before the theory exam.
